Our Wedding

Our&nbsp;story&nbsp;is&nbsp;one&nbsp;that&nbsp;began&nbsp;almost&nbsp;forty‑five&nbsp;years&nbsp;ago&nbsp;in&nbsp;Dschang,&nbsp;long&nbsp;before&nbsp;either&nbsp;of&nbsp;us&nbsp;imagined&nbsp;that&nbsp;life&nbsp;would&nbsp;bring&nbsp;us&nbsp;to&nbsp;this&nbsp;moment. Felix&nbsp;and&nbsp;I&nbsp;grew&nbsp;up&nbsp;just&nbsp;five&nbsp;minutes’&nbsp;walk&nbsp;apart.&nbsp;He&nbsp;and&nbsp;his&nbsp;sisters&nbsp;lived&nbsp;with&nbsp;their&nbsp;uncle,&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Ngam&nbsp;Joseph&nbsp;Eric,&nbsp;who&nbsp;lectured&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;University&nbsp;of&nbsp;Dschang&nbsp;—&nbsp;then&nbsp;IRA&nbsp;—&nbsp;where&nbsp;my&nbsp;late&nbsp;father,&nbsp;Tashi&nbsp;Asafor&nbsp;Thomas,&nbsp;served&nbsp;as&nbsp;an&nbsp;accountant.&nbsp;We&nbsp;attended&nbsp;the&nbsp;same&nbsp;primary&nbsp;school,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Felix&nbsp;was&nbsp;a&nbsp;regular&nbsp;visitor&nbsp;in&nbsp;our&nbsp;home.&nbsp;Our&nbsp;families&nbsp;were&nbsp;closely&nbsp;connected,&nbsp;and&nbsp;from&nbsp;childhood&nbsp;we&nbsp;shared&nbsp;a&nbsp;natural&nbsp;brother‑and‑sister&nbsp;bond. After&nbsp;primary&nbsp;school,&nbsp;we&nbsp;both&nbsp;attended&nbsp;St.&nbsp;Bede’s&nbsp;College&nbsp;Ashing&nbsp;Kom.&nbsp;Throughout&nbsp;our&nbsp;years&nbsp;there,&nbsp;we&nbsp;maintained&nbsp;that&nbsp;same&nbsp;family‑like&nbsp;closeness,&nbsp;always&nbsp;calling&nbsp;each&nbsp;other&nbsp;“bro”&nbsp;and&nbsp;“sis.”&nbsp;When&nbsp;we&nbsp;completed&nbsp;our&nbsp;time&nbsp;at&nbsp;St.&nbsp;Bede’s,&nbsp;life&nbsp;took&nbsp;us&nbsp;in&nbsp;different&nbsp;directions.&nbsp;We&nbsp;did&nbsp;not&nbsp;reconnect&nbsp;again&nbsp;until&nbsp;2010&nbsp;at&nbsp;my&nbsp;mother’s&nbsp;funeral,&nbsp;but&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;so&nbsp;overwhelmed&nbsp;by&nbsp;grief&nbsp;that&nbsp;I&nbsp;barely&nbsp;noticed&nbsp;his&nbsp;presence. Then,&nbsp;on&nbsp;September&nbsp;2nd,&nbsp;2013,&nbsp;Felix&nbsp;reached&nbsp;out&nbsp;to&nbsp;me&nbsp;on&nbsp;Facebook&nbsp;Messenger.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was&nbsp;excited&nbsp;—&nbsp;he&nbsp;wrote,&nbsp;“It’s&nbsp;just&nbsp;like&nbsp;a&nbsp;dream&nbsp;chatting&nbsp;with&nbsp;you,&nbsp;for&nbsp;I&nbsp;have&nbsp;sent&nbsp;you&nbsp;my&nbsp;friend&nbsp;request&nbsp;several&nbsp;times.”&nbsp;That&nbsp;day,&nbsp;we&nbsp;talked&nbsp;about&nbsp;everything:&nbsp;our&nbsp;parents,&nbsp;our&nbsp;siblings,&nbsp;our&nbsp;families,&nbsp;and&nbsp;our&nbsp;childhood&nbsp;memories.&nbsp;Two&nbsp;days&nbsp;later,&nbsp;he&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;again,&nbsp;calling&nbsp;me&nbsp;“pretty&nbsp;sis,”&nbsp;as&nbsp;he&nbsp;always&nbsp;did.&nbsp;In&nbsp;December&nbsp;of&nbsp;that&nbsp;year,&nbsp;we&nbsp;chatted&nbsp;again&nbsp;several&nbsp;times. In&nbsp;July&nbsp;2014,&nbsp;he&nbsp;congratulated&nbsp;me&nbsp;on&nbsp;my&nbsp;graduation&nbsp;and&nbsp;even&nbsp;sent&nbsp;me&nbsp;a&nbsp;childhood&nbsp;photo&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;two&nbsp;of&nbsp;us.&nbsp;We&nbsp;laughed&nbsp;about&nbsp;it&nbsp;and&nbsp;reminisced&nbsp;about&nbsp;the&nbsp;1994&nbsp;party&nbsp;in&nbsp;Dschang.&nbsp;Our&nbsp;conversations&nbsp;remained&nbsp;brief&nbsp;and&nbsp;occasional.&nbsp;In&nbsp;October&nbsp;2016,&nbsp;he&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;to&nbsp;invite&nbsp;me&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;blessing&nbsp;of&nbsp;his&nbsp;marriage.&nbsp;I&nbsp;didn’t&nbsp;see&nbsp;that&nbsp;message&nbsp;until&nbsp;April&nbsp;2017,&nbsp;when&nbsp;he&nbsp;reached&nbsp;out&nbsp;again.&nbsp;We&nbsp;chatted&nbsp;about&nbsp;our&nbsp;families&nbsp;and&nbsp;SABESANS,&nbsp;and&nbsp;he&nbsp;ended&nbsp;by&nbsp;telling&nbsp;me&nbsp;I&nbsp;reminded&nbsp;him&nbsp;of&nbsp;his&nbsp;mother&nbsp;—&nbsp;beautiful&nbsp;inside&nbsp;and&nbsp;out,&nbsp;and&nbsp;always&nbsp;young. We&nbsp;lost&nbsp;touch&nbsp;again&nbsp;until&nbsp;June&nbsp;2021,&nbsp;when&nbsp;he&nbsp;reached&nbsp;out&nbsp;with&nbsp;his&nbsp;usual&nbsp;compliments&nbsp;—&nbsp;“forever&nbsp;young&nbsp;sweet&nbsp;pretty&nbsp;sis”&nbsp;—&nbsp;and&nbsp;asked&nbsp;how&nbsp;I&nbsp;managed&nbsp;to&nbsp;stay&nbsp;so&nbsp;youthful.&nbsp;We&nbsp;laughed,&nbsp;caught&nbsp;up&nbsp;briefly,&nbsp;and&nbsp;moved&nbsp;on.&nbsp;At&nbsp;that&nbsp;time,&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;already&nbsp;divorced,&nbsp;but&nbsp;I&nbsp;didn’t&nbsp;think&nbsp;it&nbsp;necessary&nbsp;to&nbsp;mention. In&nbsp;February&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;we&nbsp;chatted&nbsp;again.&nbsp;He&nbsp;sent&nbsp;me&nbsp;photos&nbsp;of&nbsp;himself&nbsp;with&nbsp;my&nbsp;younger&nbsp;brother,&nbsp;Ndifor&nbsp;Anderson&nbsp;(Pa&nbsp;Tashi),&nbsp;whom&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;met&nbsp;at&nbsp;a&nbsp;friend’s&nbsp;graduation.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was&nbsp;amazed&nbsp;at&nbsp;how&nbsp;much&nbsp;the&nbsp;“little&nbsp;boy”&nbsp;he&nbsp;once&nbsp;knew&nbsp;had&nbsp;grown.&nbsp;We&nbsp;exchanged&nbsp;phone&nbsp;numbers&nbsp;and&nbsp;continued&nbsp;chatting&nbsp;occasionally. In&nbsp;June&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;during&nbsp;the&nbsp;SABESAN&nbsp;AGM&nbsp;in&nbsp;Maryland,&nbsp;we&nbsp;saw&nbsp;each&nbsp;other&nbsp;again&nbsp;for&nbsp;the&nbsp;first&nbsp;time&nbsp;in&nbsp;decades&nbsp;and&nbsp;took&nbsp;lots&nbsp;of&nbsp;photos&nbsp;together.&nbsp;After&nbsp;the&nbsp;convention,&nbsp;he&nbsp;visited&nbsp;us&nbsp;at&nbsp;my&nbsp;brother’s&nbsp;residence,&nbsp;where&nbsp;we&nbsp;spent&nbsp;time&nbsp;with&nbsp;some&nbsp;of&nbsp;my&nbsp;siblings&nbsp;and&nbsp;friends. Then&nbsp;in&nbsp;September&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;during&nbsp;one&nbsp;of&nbsp;our&nbsp;usual&nbsp;brother‑sister&nbsp;conversations,&nbsp;Felix&nbsp;began&nbsp;appreciating&nbsp;my&nbsp;beauty&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;way&nbsp;I&nbsp;carried&nbsp;myself&nbsp;—&nbsp;but&nbsp;this&nbsp;time&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;more&nbsp;serious&nbsp;tone.&nbsp;Eventually,&nbsp;he&nbsp;told&nbsp;me&nbsp;he&nbsp;was&nbsp;interested&nbsp;in&nbsp;us&nbsp;getting&nbsp;married.&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;completely&nbsp;taken&nbsp;aback.&nbsp;I&nbsp;reminded&nbsp;him&nbsp;that&nbsp;we&nbsp;were&nbsp;like&nbsp;family&nbsp;and&nbsp;that&nbsp;I&nbsp;didn’t&nbsp;want&nbsp;to&nbsp;spoil&nbsp;the&nbsp;bond&nbsp;we&nbsp;had.&nbsp;I&nbsp;even&nbsp;suggested&nbsp;a&nbsp;few&nbsp;women&nbsp;from&nbsp;Dschang&nbsp;living&nbsp;in&nbsp;Maryland.&nbsp;But&nbsp;he&nbsp;insisted&nbsp;that&nbsp;what&nbsp;he&nbsp;felt&nbsp;for&nbsp;me&nbsp;was&nbsp;unlike&nbsp;anything&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;ever&nbsp;felt&nbsp;for&nbsp;anyone&nbsp;else&nbsp;—&nbsp;and&nbsp;he&nbsp;told&nbsp;me&nbsp;plainly&nbsp;that&nbsp;he&nbsp;was&nbsp;not&nbsp;my&nbsp;brother. Felix&nbsp;persisted,&nbsp;and&nbsp;eventually&nbsp;I&nbsp;agreed&nbsp;that&nbsp;we&nbsp;could&nbsp;try&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;close&nbsp;friends&nbsp;and&nbsp;see&nbsp;where&nbsp;things&nbsp;led.&nbsp;Before&nbsp;I&nbsp;knew&nbsp;it,&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;booked&nbsp;a&nbsp;hotel&nbsp;and&nbsp;driven&nbsp;nine&nbsp;hours&nbsp;to&nbsp;Ottawa&nbsp;in&nbsp;December&nbsp;2022&nbsp;to&nbsp;prove&nbsp;how&nbsp;serious&nbsp;he&nbsp;was. By&nbsp;the&nbsp;end&nbsp;of&nbsp;May&nbsp;2023,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;I&nbsp;discovered&nbsp;some&nbsp;inconsistencies&nbsp;and&nbsp;ended&nbsp;the&nbsp;relationship.&nbsp;I&nbsp;told&nbsp;him&nbsp;we&nbsp;should&nbsp;preserve&nbsp;our&nbsp;brother‑sister&nbsp;bond,&nbsp;especially&nbsp;because&nbsp;our&nbsp;families&nbsp;were&nbsp;close.&nbsp;I&nbsp;reminded&nbsp;him&nbsp;that&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;not&nbsp;desperate,&nbsp;that&nbsp;I&nbsp;knew&nbsp;my&nbsp;worth,&nbsp;and&nbsp;that&nbsp;I&nbsp;knew&nbsp;exactly&nbsp;what&nbsp;I&nbsp;wanted.&nbsp;But&nbsp;he&nbsp;would&nbsp;not&nbsp;accept&nbsp;it.&nbsp;Some&nbsp;days&nbsp;he&nbsp;will&nbsp;call&nbsp;me&nbsp;more&nbsp;than&nbsp;fifty&nbsp;times&nbsp;but&nbsp;I&nbsp;wasn't&nbsp;convinced&nbsp;yet&nbsp;that&nbsp;he&nbsp;knew&nbsp;what&nbsp;he&nbsp;wanted. In&nbsp;June&nbsp;2023,&nbsp;he&nbsp;showed&nbsp;up&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;SABESA&nbsp;USA‑Canada&nbsp;Convention&nbsp;in&nbsp;Boston,&nbsp;even&nbsp;though&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;not&nbsp;planned&nbsp;to&nbsp;attend.&nbsp;He&nbsp;kept&nbsp;calling&nbsp;me&nbsp;to&nbsp;come&nbsp;to&nbsp;his&nbsp;room&nbsp;because&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;brought&nbsp;some&nbsp;dresses&nbsp;for&nbsp;me&nbsp;—&nbsp;which&nbsp;I&nbsp;refused.&nbsp;But&nbsp;he&nbsp;would&nbsp;watch&nbsp;who&nbsp;I&nbsp;danced&nbsp;with,&nbsp;and&nbsp;we&nbsp;took&nbsp;some&nbsp;great&nbsp;photos.&nbsp;I&nbsp;thought&nbsp;that&nbsp;was&nbsp;it&nbsp;and&nbsp;tried&nbsp;to&nbsp;keep&nbsp;my&nbsp;distance.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;morning&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;BBQ,&nbsp;he&nbsp;called&nbsp;again&nbsp;severally,&nbsp;asking&nbsp;me&nbsp;to&nbsp;come&nbsp;downstairs&nbsp;for&nbsp;breakfast&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;already&nbsp;paid&nbsp;for.&nbsp;I&nbsp;still&nbsp;refused,&nbsp;trying&nbsp;my&nbsp;best&nbsp;to&nbsp;avoid&nbsp;him.&nbsp;But&nbsp;when&nbsp;I&nbsp;finally&nbsp;came&nbsp;downstairs&nbsp;around&nbsp;noon&nbsp;to&nbsp;find&nbsp;a&nbsp;ride,&nbsp;he&nbsp;hadn't&nbsp;left.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was&nbsp;standing&nbsp;right&nbsp;there&nbsp;in&nbsp;front&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;hotel&nbsp;waiting&nbsp;for&nbsp;me.&nbsp;He&nbsp;picked&nbsp;me&nbsp;up,&nbsp;and&nbsp;as&nbsp;we&nbsp;drove&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;venue,&nbsp;he&nbsp;apologized,&nbsp;showed&nbsp;me&nbsp;proof&nbsp;of&nbsp;everything&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;been&nbsp;trying&nbsp;to&nbsp;explain,&nbsp;and&nbsp;eventually&nbsp;I&nbsp;forgave&nbsp;him.&nbsp;He&nbsp;traveled&nbsp;back&nbsp;afterward. We&nbsp;resumed&nbsp;communication&nbsp;from&nbsp;that&nbsp;time&nbsp;until&nbsp;January&nbsp;2024,&nbsp;when&nbsp;I&nbsp;ended&nbsp;things&nbsp;again.&nbsp;He&nbsp;called&nbsp;my&nbsp;brother,&nbsp;my&nbsp;friends&nbsp;—&nbsp;anyone&nbsp;who&nbsp;would&nbsp;listen&nbsp;—&nbsp;asking&nbsp;them&nbsp;to&nbsp;talk&nbsp;to&nbsp;me.&nbsp;I&nbsp;insisted&nbsp;we&nbsp;remain&nbsp;only&nbsp;as&nbsp;brother&nbsp;and&nbsp;sister. But&nbsp;he&nbsp;kept&nbsp;telling&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;close&nbsp;to&nbsp;him&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;his&nbsp;wife&nbsp;and&nbsp;would&nbsp;not&nbsp;let&nbsp;me&nbsp;be. He&nbsp;told&nbsp;me&nbsp;he&nbsp;would&nbsp;fix&nbsp;whatever&nbsp;I&nbsp;needed&nbsp;him&nbsp;to&nbsp;fix&nbsp;and&nbsp;come&nbsp;back.&nbsp;He&nbsp;continued&nbsp;checking&nbsp;on&nbsp;me&nbsp;regularly,&nbsp;reminding&nbsp;me&nbsp;of&nbsp;his&nbsp;love&nbsp;and&nbsp;his&nbsp;intention&nbsp;to&nbsp;marry&nbsp;me,&nbsp;and&nbsp;even&nbsp;reached&nbsp;out&nbsp;to&nbsp;some&nbsp;friends&nbsp;and&nbsp;to&nbsp;my&nbsp;brother&nbsp;Anderson&nbsp;to&nbsp;convince&nbsp;me. In&nbsp;January&nbsp;2025,&nbsp;he&nbsp;began&nbsp;putting&nbsp;pressure&nbsp;again&nbsp;after&nbsp;wishing&nbsp;me&nbsp;a&nbsp;happy&nbsp;new&nbsp;year&nbsp;and&nbsp;hoping&nbsp;that&nbsp;we&nbsp;get&nbsp;back.—&nbsp;asking&nbsp;friends&nbsp;if&nbsp;I&nbsp;had&nbsp;moved&nbsp;on,&nbsp;watching&nbsp;my&nbsp;activities&nbsp;closely,&nbsp;constantly&nbsp;checking&nbsp;etc.&nbsp;Then&nbsp;in&nbsp;May&nbsp;2025,&nbsp;when&nbsp;he&nbsp;heard&nbsp;about&nbsp;my&nbsp;friend&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;Doris&nbsp;Mukong&nbsp;Timti’s&nbsp;health&nbsp;crisis,&nbsp;he&nbsp;called&nbsp;constantly&nbsp;to&nbsp;encourage&nbsp;me&nbsp;and&nbsp;to&nbsp;support.&nbsp;When&nbsp;she&nbsp;passed&nbsp;in&nbsp;June,&nbsp;he&nbsp;supported&nbsp;and&nbsp;was&nbsp;there&nbsp;for&nbsp;me&nbsp;through&nbsp;it&nbsp;all.&nbsp;He&nbsp;took&nbsp;the&nbsp;opportunity&nbsp;to&nbsp;tell&nbsp;me&nbsp;how&nbsp;much&nbsp;he&nbsp;wanted&nbsp;me&nbsp;to&nbsp;give&nbsp;him&nbsp;another&nbsp;chance&nbsp;and&nbsp;that&nbsp;is&nbsp;how&nbsp;we&nbsp;resumed&nbsp;the&nbsp;relationship. During&nbsp;one&nbsp;of&nbsp;his&nbsp;visits&nbsp;to&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;in&nbsp;September,&nbsp;he&nbsp;informed&nbsp;me&nbsp;of&nbsp;all&nbsp;the&nbsp;actions&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;taken&nbsp;to&nbsp;protect&nbsp;and&nbsp;strengthen&nbsp;our&nbsp;relationship.&nbsp;He&nbsp;told&nbsp;me&nbsp;he&nbsp;would&nbsp;never&nbsp;let&nbsp;me&nbsp;go&nbsp;again&nbsp;and&nbsp;would&nbsp;do&nbsp;everything&nbsp;to&nbsp;keep&nbsp;me. As&nbsp;soon&nbsp;as&nbsp;he&nbsp;left,&nbsp;he&nbsp;began&nbsp;contacting&nbsp;my&nbsp;family&nbsp;and&nbsp;friends&nbsp;behind&nbsp;my&nbsp;back.&nbsp;Before&nbsp;I&nbsp;knew&nbsp;it,&nbsp;they&nbsp;had&nbsp;organized&nbsp;a&nbsp;surprise&nbsp;engagement&nbsp;gathering. Then&nbsp;he&nbsp;drove&nbsp;to&nbsp;Maryland&nbsp;with&nbsp;his&nbsp;family&nbsp;to&nbsp;my&nbsp;father’s&nbsp;house&nbsp;and&nbsp;performed&nbsp;the&nbsp;knock‑door.&nbsp;He&nbsp;wanted&nbsp;us&nbsp;to&nbsp;marry&nbsp;in&nbsp;December&nbsp;2025.&nbsp;I&nbsp;told&nbsp;him&nbsp;we&nbsp;needed&nbsp;more&nbsp;time&nbsp;—&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;sure,&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;grounded,&nbsp;and&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;ready&nbsp;as&nbsp;this&nbsp;was&nbsp;a&nbsp;significant&nbsp;milestone. This love story began all the way back in our primary school days, although at that time I never had the courage to speak my true feelings to Virginie. We grew up together in Dschang, attended the same primary school, and later went to the same secondary school. Virginie and her siblings were always very close to my family, and our homes were like an extension of each other.I still remember one unforgettable moment from our secondary school days. When we received our GCE results, our parents organized a special celebration in a nightclub in Dschang — just for us Anglophone students who had passed that year. It was the first time many of us spent a night outside our homes. That evening was the first time I felt truly close to this beautiful queen. We even took a picture together that night, a memory that stayed with me for years.But life took us in different directions. When it was time for university, she went to Buea and I went to Dschang. We lost contact. Years later, I met her younger brother in Bamenda when he returned from abroad. We greeted each other warmly and spoke briefly about the family, but for some reason, I didn’t ask about Virginie. Maybe I wasn’t ready.Time passed, until one day I came across her on Facebook. I commented on her pictures — she was still as beautiful as ever. I had sent her friend requests many times, but she never accepted. It wasn’t until we met again in Maryland that everything changed. Seeing her again felt like a dream. We were both so happy to reconnect. We shared stories, laughed about old memories, and she even served me a special traditional meal(Achu and yellow soup) at her brother’s house.After I returned home, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I kept calling, checking on her, and wondering how I would finally express what had been in my heart for so long. One day, I asked her, “Why don’t you get married?” She gave me her reasons for being alone. Then I told her to help me find a girl — and I made sure to specify that she must be from Dschang. She agreed, and I said to myself, “Good… she has fallen into my trap.”I told her she needed a man who truly knew her, someone who understood her history and her heart. I explained that if she found someone new, she would have to start all over again. Then I gathered my courage and told her not to bother looking for any girl — because the only person I wanted was her.She was shocked. She said we were brother and sister. I asked her, “Since when?”Before she could fully process it, I was already on my way to Canada to see her. And before long, she found herself visiting me in the U.S. too. Our connection grew naturally, beautifully, and with a sense of destiny.Then on October 18th, 2025, I proposed to her — a complete surprise. And today, here we are, celebrating what we both wished for, prayed for, worked for, and waited for.Life has been sweet ever since. I have been in the arms of this beautiful, loving queen, and every day I thank God for bringing us back together after so many years.All we can say is: Thank you, Lord, for this love and for this moment.
